Pros and Cons of Modern Technology for Parenting

Growth of technology in the past decade has transformed the lives of children. Parents are worried if it is good for children to have access to modern technology. When it comes to our children, there are pros and cons of children using latest gadgets. Some of the positive and negative effects of technology on our children are mentioned below.

Online education: Technology has made it possible for people to learn from anywhere in the world. Finding tutors online is a tremendously growing trend around the world. Online tuition can be the perfect solution for children who are comfortable with computer technology and virtual environments. It can save time, travel expenses and in some cases can be slightly cheaper than face-to-face tuition. Children find it easy to log in to the computer at home and complete their tuition studies than it is to walk or drive to their tutor. Parents feel good knowing their child is safe at home. However, it is not always effective in cases where facial expression and body language is required for better explanation.

Unlimited knowledge: Nowadays children have internet both in schools as well as homes, which provides unlimited access to knowledge. This in turn helps them learn and grow like never before. Finding information is much easier with the internet and other resources available. Internet, however, can be harmful to children. We cannot keep a 24*7 check on what all websites our children are visiting and what all things they come across on the internet. Children may also stumble across sites that are completely inappropriate for them. The young minds of children will be corrupted through their exposure to things that are meant for adults.

Social Skills: Today’s children spend most of their time on their parents’ or their personal phones, not interacting with each other physically in person. Most of them prefer to text instead of making a call. As mentioned earlier as well, the parents cannot be in all places at all times, and to reduce the gap, technology plays a major role.Parents and children can stay connected with each other across the globe through video chat or similar platforms. Technology has displaced many important activities such as face-to-face interaction, family-time and so on. In the long run, children might have trouble even initiating a face-to-face conversation or holding a conversation, because it is always done through a text message.

Creativity and Learning: When there is so much information available on the internet, children might start to think and believe that there is no need for creativity. They find all the information on the internet in order to complete their projects and assignments, thus, leading to a lack of creativity. They get all information they need from the Internet, and then they simply copy-paste it for their assignments. A lot of children spend most of their time just watching TV, checking their Facebook walls, and playing games online. As a result, they learn new things. Video and computer games are actually believed to have some benefits, such as stimulating the brain and making children think. Parents need to allow their children to have some free time to play computer games if they want to. Perhaps they could even research how to get ps2 bios for their computers. That would help children to access PlayStation games on their PC, allowing them to play some fun games.

Physical and Mental Health: Physical activities are very essential for strong muscles and a healthy mind. Children now rely on technology for the majority of their leisure time. When a sedentary lifestyle becomes a habit, children will face an increased risk of obesity. Technology-dependent children are at a risk of depression to an extent that requires medical attention. Children who spend too much time on working at computers or tablets or mobile phones are at risk of having vision problems as well.

Conclusion: The benefits of these devices, if used moderately and appropriately, can be great. Having said that, it is very important that you as parents manage the rules of using technology will ultimately affect your child’s way of looking at it. Too many times, parents are seen not practicing what they teach and therefore, feelings of resentment arise when children feel that parents ‘abuse’ their power. It is critical that as parents, you very well understand your role in building a good environment and set a nice example for your child. Don’t forget that your child will copy your usage of technology and gadgets.
